What is digital tachograph? What is the difference between it and gps tracker?

If you are a driver of a large truck or a long-distance coach, you will find the importance of digital tachograph. Officially known as a recording equipment in legal texts, The digital tachograph is the basic of the road transport industry. As we can get details datas in online tracking platform and make sure whether the drivers are safe, companies are fair and the road is safety for everyone.

What is a digital tachograph?

A digital tachograph (often referred as a ” tachograph”) is fit to a vehicle usually and record it’s speed, distance and driver’s activity digitally. However, it comes from analogue tachograph which was record by paper charts through hand writing. Moreover, it has printer in the interface for paper charts type (with timing and speed, etc.).

While it works for decades and offers a lot of help, but it’s easy to exchanged. Due to the shortage, EU forcibly demand most new vehicles use digital tachograph in May 2006.

Digital tachograph is not only a signal box; it is an integrated system with strong features and high safety.

How is the digital tachograph work?

  1. The Vehicle Unit (VU): Usually we call it main unit in China. It is the heart of the system. Which is installed in the driver’s cab-usually on the dashboard-it looks like a car radio. It features a LCD screen, a printer for on-the-sport records, a SIM card slot and a connector for data downloads. The VU acts as a CPU for recording, storing and typing all coming data.
  2. The Motion Sensor: Usuually located on the vehicle garebox, it is the tachograph’s eyes and ears. Also, when the vehicle is moving, the sensor will generate electronic pulses. Meanwhile, these signals are encrypted before being sent to the Vehicle Unit so that nobody can exchange them easily.
  3. The Tachograph Cards: The tachograph uses smarts cards to identify who is the vehicle operator. And there are 4 different types: Driver cars for individual; Company Card for fleet operators; Workshop Card for technicals and Control Card for Law Officials.

What Information does the tachograph record?

The digital tachograph acts as a “black box” for commercial vehicles. It records lots of information which is usually known as 4 different types as bellow:

  • Driving and Rest Times: The key function. It records the driver’s status—driving, working, available, or resting—second by second. This is obey to the EU regulations-rest daily/weekly in order to prevent driver fatigue.
  • Vehicle Performance: Real-time record vehicle speed and mileage.
  • Identification Data: It stores the identity of the driver(s), the vehicle’s registration number, and details of the card status.
  • Security Events: Above all, it records any attempted behavior, power supply interruptions, or sensor errors, acting as a witness to any tampering attempts.

The Evolution: The “Smart” Tachograph

Technology does not stand still. The digital tachograph has upgrading to its second generation, officially known as the Smart Tachograph version 2 (G2V2). These new devices, rolled out as part of the EU”s Mobility Package. Moreover, with higher intelligent and GPRS online management function, the device is works with much more efficiency.

Key features of our smart digital tachograph is as bellow:

  • GNSS Positioning: It uses Galileo (Europe’s GPS) to record location datas when the vehicle is moving between different countries or during loading or unloading. Furthermore, it helps enforce rules on “cabotage” (transporting goods within a foreign country), and prevent drivers from tampering with location records.
  • Remote Enforcement (DSRC): Enforcement officers can use the roadside reader to check for illegal items without stopping the vehicle.  This allows compliant drivers to benefit from fewer delays while enabling authorities to focus on vehicles that require a physical inspection.
  • ITS Interface: It features a Bluetooth interface for real-time data sharing with fleet management software, enabling companies to monitor driver behavior and compliance live.

  • Enhanced Data Storage: Driver activity is now stored for 56 days (up from 28), providing authorities with a longer window for analysis.

Why is the digital tachograph so important?

The digital tachograph is more than just a piece of mandatory equipment; it delivers benefits across the industry.

  • For Safety: By enforcing driving and rest limits, it is the single most important tool in combating driver fatigue, a major cause of heavy vehicle accidents.
  • For Fair Competition: It ensures that all companies play by the same rules. “Rogue” operators cannot gain an unfair advantage by forcing their drivers to skip rest and drive longer hours.
  • For Efficiency: Fleet managers can use the data to analyze driving behavior, optimize routes, and reduce fuel consumption.
  • For Compliance: It simplifies the process for companies and drivers to prove their adherence to the law, providing secure digital records that are admissible in court.

the future of digital tachograph

The regulations surrounding tachographs are strict. Fleet operators must download data from the Vehicle Unit and driver cards at regular intervals and archive it for a minimum of one year (soon to be two years) -5-10. Failing to comply can result in severe fines and even being barred from operating across borders.

The rollout of the Smart Tachograph G2V2 is currently underway. By July 1, 2026, the rules will expand to include light commercial vehicles (vans) weighing between 2.5 and 3.5 tonnes engaged in international transport, closing a long-standing regulatory gap -3-8.

In conclusion, the digital tachograph stands as a testament to how technology can regulate an industry, protect workers, and save lives. It is a silent partner in every long-haul journey, ensuring that when you see a truck on the road, the person behind the wheel is fit, rested, and ready to drive safely.
